A brand new restaurant has just opened at the end of Stalham Staithe. The buildings - once run down sheds - and have been very tastefully restored - lots of honey coloured reclaimed timber everywhere. We had an evening meal there tonight, a day after its opening.
The welcome was warm and genuine, the service very good, the food very flavoursome and beautifully presented. Was it worth the £24.00 a head without wine for a three course meal and coffee? Possibly a little on the pricey side. The ingredients were local and fresh.
The restaurant will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 9.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. and Sundays ten until three. It appears to be a very ambitious project. I doubt that it will appeal to the majority of boat hirers, but should satisfy those who want a special meal a short walk away from the river.

I will shortly be living only 10 minutes walk from there but there is no way i will spend that sort of money without drinks or wine these restuants need to get real and have a promotion whereby wine was like wetherspoon prices around £6/7 a bottle.My wife and i had a meal last night in a steakhouse down in Pagham west sussex and the whole 2 course meals came to £26 including a couple of drinks.I am not mean but some restruants are taking the proverbial P--s.

At those sort of prices it's OK for an aniversary or birthday celibration type meal.
It's a bit much for a "i can't be bothered cooking" type meal which is what most boaters wil be looking for I suspect.
Still if there is the market for it, more power to their elbow I say. But just because it's near the water doesn't mean the clientel will have loads of money.

Unfortunately, the Staithe Restaurant at Stalham has closed for business. OK, so it wasn't a "pile it high sell it cheap" type restaurant - and this may have been its undoing - but I believe very strongly that there must be many openings for riverside restaurants. Horses for courses, I know, but most that we have at the moment are pitiful.

What a shame,
I was looking forward to trying this place out.
I know its not "pile it high and sell it cheap" but there is a market for this type of place and Stalham could do with a decent Resturant.
You gets what you pays for in this life and if its good enough then £24 per head for something special is OK with me.
Try Booking a meal at the Kings Head in Coltishall in mid summer to see if the market is there.

I have to say that this venture did seem a little bit doubtful all along. The hours of business looked all wrong, a lack of Sunday evening and Monday opening must have reduced takings both from locals and holidaymakers on turnround. Something which was less utilitarian but recognisable to the loyal patrons of the old Richardson café you would have thought would have had a good following.

HI ALL, heck yet another closure of a business, dont people actually survey what customers and the locals,and boating community want out of an establishment, ie reasonably priced, wholesome food and a well kept ale?it cannot be rocket science, can it?..

Hi all,
I know the builder that done the conversion work.
He also built my house.
SHAME HE DIDNT FINISH IT!!!
I wouldnt recommend him to anyone.
I also know some of the staff have left.

I also know one of the Chef's, he turned up for work to find the place closed, the owners said they would call him, he's still waiting. He's now found another job as he wasn't going to be messed around.
When he told me about this restaurant a few weeks ago I didn't think it sounded like the right place for the area, the location was wrong and so were the prices, as mentioned above people want good traditional pub grub with a good pint of beer.
