hi all, "The Broads could be set to reach out to a new generation of holidaymakers by developing a bold new image." http://www.edp24.co.uk/content/edp24/news/story.aspx?brand=EDPOnline&category=News&tBrand=EDPOnline&tCategory=xDefault&itemid=NOED23%20Mar%202010%2020%3A11%3A15%3A473

What a load of old cobblers, how much of our hard earned tolls is goingto be spent on this rubbish. Is this the guy that got rid of the flag off the BA planes tail fins? How long before it's re-branded "Packmans Water Wonderland" It's about time the BA realised that unles they improve Navigation, the Broads will die as a "tourist attraction"! Will a Bird Sanctuary atract anything like the number of visitors that boating does? I think not, no matter how much you spend on re-branding. Spend the money where it is needed not on arty farty plans to "improve" the image. Dave
If it is to be it is up to me!

Sounds like just the sort of thing to attract the drunken crowds to the rivers, causing mayhem on their way to the site of the latest music festival. Then, after the festival, when they are even more drunk, navigating their hire craft to a point where the tide drops fast and shoving the nose in the reeds hoping it will be safe for the night. Stick your re-branding where the sun dont shine and spend money on what it should be spent on. And how much did the presentation cost the toll payers?

Dave - if you read the article you will see funding comes from Europe under some scheme or other. I don't see a lot wrong with any initiative to try and attract a wider audience. Given the no.of hire craft, I would have thought there was scope to attract some new investment and encourage further visitors as a whole to this area. They all provide jobs and money something of which there is a shortage of both locally.

quote:"......Mr Middleton, who has carried out re-branding work for such companies as British Airways, Aviva and Pret a Manger, said water was clearly the element that made the Broads brand what it was........" How much has he charged for coming up with that little gem. I would have thought there was a bit of a clue in the words "Broads"

Whist the devil will be in the detail, sorry but I don’t agree. A renewed emphasise to the waterways is in my personal opinion the way to go. If festivals and ‘frolics’ were to return it might be a very good thing, the water rats jazz tours I would have thought prove their potential. The development of riverside venues for such events could make a lot of sense after all just think for a moment about our own forum meeting, apart from Ranworth Island and possibly Salhouse or Beccles quay where else might such event be held.

Marshman, the funding for the initial work may (at least part of it) come from Europe but the money for the actual re-branding, signage advertising etc will be funded out of general income i.e Tolls! Dave If it is to be it is up to me!

In my opinion I don't think the Broads need a "new bold image". I believe that the image of the Broads to most people is of a peacful week or two drifting along the rivers taking in the lovely scenery and enjoying the tranquility, meeting the friendly locals and enjoying a pint or two in the lovely pubs that are abundant in the region. I think it would spoil it if someone tried to "Londonise it" (if thats a word). I go there to escape city life not to encounter it!!!

Whether some comes out of our tolls or not, we have to move on. Life changes, people die and whether you lot like it or not we must continue to attract all age groups. It is totally selfish to believe that just because you are here no one else can come and discover it and I as a Norfolk resident would encourage a new generation of people to come and discover this magic. If you do not do that, as time goes on the industry must decline - you have only to see what has happened to the hire industry over 10/15 years to realise that trend can continue. Why assume that the new people will disturb the tranquility? Last year saw an increasing number of middle aged boozie boaters in large parties who were not all paragons of virtue! We cannot stand still and must move on for the sake of people like Bill who invest in the future. Of course everyone can easily think of rebranding techniques and slogans - thats why so many of you are able to use your talents in a creative industry such as advertising! Any of you???

M.M., I used too, two years at college and for six years, long years, in London. No job was worth that!! Re-branding expert, another word for someone who wouldn't probably otherwise have a job! However I agree with Bill, provided no one suggests Glastonberry on water! Jenny Morgan, A vane, a boat, but not a bird. Oulton Broad Cave Rescue Squad. The Broads is The Broads, it is NOT a National Park. Parliament says so!!
