I have had ten full weeks, about four short breaks and countless day hire boats on the Norfolk broads since i was a child. What gripes me is when you talk about your holiday to people. Some people say "why do you want to holiday on the Broads". Others have said wouldnt be seen dead there and worse. On asking have they ever been on a broads holiday, the answer is ALWAYS no i have not. This makes me angry as the saying is if its your first visit to the Broads it wont be your last. (how true) Been there and love it! surely im not the only one to get these comments and would like to hear from anyone hearing the same. All the best Mick.

A holiday on the Broads is usually understood to be a boating holiday. You generally either love boats or hate the thought of boats. I guess if you fall into the latter category the comments you experienced are understandable. Still it would get pretty crowded on the water of everybody loved boats.

"Always wanted to do that" tends to be the usual when we talk of the Broads.

TIN HAT ON you do have to admit it is a glorified caravan holiday so that may put people off saying that until you experience what we all know you ain't going to know what a great place it is. People have to self cater to an extent and that not to everybodies liking, and the draw of the non thinking all inclusive holiday can be cheaper as well, but lets keep it to ourselves what a fantastic place this is

Might I try and avoid a generalisation, yes by tradition Broads' holidays were about boating, indeed one might say a boating ‘activity’ holiday, which perhaps is just a little bit different. However, boating is not the only way to enjoy the Broads even if it is a very good way to do so. It’s perfectly possible to stay in B&B’s or caravans and sample many aspects of the Broads that those on boats simply cruise past. Be it the wild life, the windmills / pumps, the stately homes, the country pubs, the walks/ cycle rides without great big hills, village events or just the solitude of open spaces there is a awful lot for other visitors. I recall a blind visitor who once said to me that the appeal to her was that the Broads unlike almost anywhere else provided a ‘soundscape’ that was different wherever she stopped from the sound of the wind in the alders and willows to that through the reeds, from the song birds to the water fowl. Even the coast is not consistent and that is not far away, not all ‘kiss me quick’ hats by any means.

I think a lot of people misunderstand what the Broads are like - I certainly did before my first visit. Everyone I knew that had been to the Broads had been as part of a lads holiday / booze cruise. "There's a pub every mile!" was one particular comment that sticks in the memory, so I was expecting something similar to Benidorm. Could I have been more wrong?!! Not sure why, but I was also expecting there to be locks to navigate, as have a number of others I have spoken to. Whilst this didn't particularly bother me, I can imagine that this may make some people more anxious. Most holidays require some level of planning in order to get around and enjoy the local scenery / attractions, but the beauty of the Broads is that there is so much to 'soak up' just as you're cruising along. It's almost impossible to get stressed whilst holidaying on The Broads...almost.

Just for a change we are staying on land during Septembers trip and hope to visit some of the places not yet visited by boat and then compare the difference when arriving by boat.

The all lads booze cruisers do the holiday industry no great favours whatsoever. We had two biggies on Oulton Broad last night, tanked up by five, all fingers, full speed ahead, mocking laughs and insults to boats that they passed, and a trail of empties astern. It has always gone on, and ask people why they don't visit the Broads and it so often boils down to just that. A yard has hired out two big boats, great in the short term, but it is not helping the long term image of the Broads. Spend/waste a fortune re-branding the Broads, but until the big yards wake up it is all so very pointless.
Jenny Morgan, A vane, a boat, but not a bird. http://www.drascombe-association.org.uk/index.php The Broads is The Broads, it is NOT a National Park. Parliament says so!! And so does DEFRA & the Ordnance Survey!!
