Another thread raised a question in my mind.

You have a friend and their family who have never been to the Norfolk Broads.  What one place would you take them to and how would you get there, so that they experienced the true spirit of the Broads?

I live near How Hill and that is the place I take first time visitors.
Normally we go on foot as the walk is full of interest. I can talk about the history and point out lots of interesting things along the way. Of course, when you get there it speaks for itself.

I would take them on my day boat fom Beccles to Geldeston and stop on the way for a riverside picnic. IMHO the pretiest stretch of river on the Broads.

For me it would have to be Dillham  Smile

The section of water between Wayford Bridge and Dillham is straight out of heaven. Crystal clear water with the sun glistening on the surface like diamonds, water lily's spreading like a carpet before you, and if all that wasn't special enough you can look down through the clear waters and watch the fish swimming along beside you like a guard of honour.

Playful  can't wait till the next time.

I'd arrange to pick them up from Ranworth in the morning and take them to Coltishall for a meal, dropping into Salhouse and Wroxham Broads, and a quick stop at Roys for a few essential supplies. The run from Wroxham to Coltishall is one of my favourites.

Honesty and Integrity ... When you can fake those, you've cracked it.

I was going to sat the stretch up to Coltishall or mybe Rocland Broad but I'd forgotten about the run to Dilham until I read Martin's wonderful description, which is so very true.

So it would be Dilham for me too.

With a riverside property we get our fair share of visitors new to the Broads - and we love it.  We routinely head upriver from that awful bridge Wink  and make for Hickling, Horsey and Catfield Dyke.  SWMBO is brilliant at last minute catering, so dining tends to be chez nous and al fresco.  The Broads are a globally unique environment and I burst with pride when introducing them to visitors.

I think I would probably go for the Waveney, between Burgh St Peter and Geldeston although I do think the Chet is very pretty as well - except for the horrible red posts. Its really hard to choose as I love it all.

My friends visit me when on the boat every year and most enjoy the aatmosphere as much as I do.  Their highlights have been quiet stretches of river, Reedham (which they refer to as Balamory) and the big posh boats in Brundall. Although I have to keep them at a distance here as it would take ages to clean the dribble off all those gin palaces. tounge-in-cheek  They also get nervous going through Somerleyton as apparently 'it'll never fit',  but it all adds to the fun.  The only exception has been one particular friend who loves the boat but falls asleep within 10 minutes of the engine starting, everytime! She hasn't actually seen a great deal, despite coming for several years.  Smile

I think that Bill is being a bit cute here, I am sure he knows the Broads are so diverse that everyone has their own fave bit.

I have actually considered this one before and I would go for the left field.....

Tell them to travel by train to Berney Arms Station, walk to the Inn, lunch al fresco watching the wildlife and river traffic.

Beautiful, wild, peaceful, bliss, social history, beer...

Then onto the boat..... and away

H
