Yes folks it's time for real chaos on the rivers, Wroxham reggatta is now underway, and for those faint of heart Horning open regatta starts next Monday for 5 days.
Horning SC will be asking all sailors not to force / ask motor boats into the middle of the river and we respectfully ask motor boats if they can, stick to the banks (within 6 feet is a good idea)and just adjust your speed. If you do we should treat you as the bank and miss you.
Note that in sailing on the broads missing you by six inches is considered a good distance off!
We hope this year we will have an increased number of juniors who have learnt to sail recently thanks in part to your votes which got them the training support motorboat/ floating classroom "Bure Magic".
So please be patient with them and us.
Sailing will start at 09:30 each day through till at most 18:00.
Those who wish to plan their trips to see or Avoid the sailing, may wish to look at the Green book link http://www.thegreenbook.org.uk/diary/diary.asp

And if you see a large bloke with a Aussie leather hat in a rescue boat that'l be me.

PS this a plea from a member not actually an official representation of the club!!
Smile

Went through Horning Regatta last year...After instruction from the marshals eveyone was told to keep close to the bank and go slow as possible as we went through the juniors...this was fine because they came close but always kept clear of the boats as we all passed ..the trouble began when we went through the `Adults`( supposed to be anyway ) .. i would say about half of them didnt seem to care about us `holiday makers` by cutting us up , making us reverse hard and leaving no room for a safe passage close to the bank...

heres a pic of the easy trip past the juniors..

I may be slow but I'm ahead of you

I must admit a few years ago I came that way and got hit so hard that one of my fenders hit a quay heading so hard it exploded.

So much for the 6" "rule".

Must have been a female crew.  Their 6" is a lot different than mine ! Gasp

I came across the littleuns in mirror dinghies at the Horning regatta last year.  It was a flat calm day, with not a breath of wind. I was asked by the marshall to hold station while the kids sorted themselves out.  They used us to push against in order to move along the river!  Ended up holding at still as poss right on Swan corner for about 15 minutes.

Thought the headline "School teacher knocks dinghy kids into river" wouldn't go down very well with the boss.  Was very tempting though!  Evil Grin

Paul, the 6" rule was devised by the good ladies of Norfolk, many of which are farmer's wives. In Suffolk it is normally accepted as the meaningful 8" rule.

Hum, always an emotive subject this yachts & powered craft issue. Personally I try to avoid these events  not because I have anything against the rags and sticks brigade and in the main when you come across them by themselves they are usually a happy smiley bunch. The problems seem to start when you get a high concentration of them in a small area and some sort of pack instinct / competitive red mist appears to take over. In these situations caution courtesy and respect sometimes even to each other seem to get thrown out with the bilge water by some folk.  Tinhat

Best Regards

Bob

The regatta should run smoothly as long as motor cruisers stay on the banks. The second picture shows what happens when a motor cruiser is forced into the middle when there are a lot of boats about.  It is far more likely that boats will collide if they do unpredictable things like going into the middle of the river, overtaking or (as one boat did in frustration last year) steaming through at about 8mph without much regard for the racing yachts.

The occasions when sailies usually get into a mess are when there is no wind and large groups of boats(and therefore no steerage so they can't get off the banks) or if there is a gusty wind coming through the gaps in the bungalows, causing sudden changes in direction and/or speed.

Thanks in advance to all those who have to motor through the regatta in anticipation of your patience and understanding, and enjoy the sight of what will hopefully be a large turnout of boats.

Bob, when we race, both respect and courtesy are high on our agenda, you are wrong to think otherwise. But it is a competition, and sometimes taken very seriously indeed, with only fractions of a second between competitors, even at only two miles per hour. The regattas are very often the highlight of our sporting year. Despite the shouting and seemingly aggressive sailing, we are all generally very good, and often lifelong friends.
