Need to lift out our boat she is 40ft- wide beam- 13ft. Anyone know of anywhere reasonable on the southern broads, Norwich end? Just had a quote for a lift in and out, hard standing and pressure wash at Bell's £470.83. I know Haven marina in Lowestoft is cheap, but we don't really want to trail all that way. Cheers

Including the cost of - at least 3 men for 1 hour each, who need to move & prepare boats ready etc, plus crane maintenance costs and annual insurance costs for ALL equipment that is involved with lifting, a qualified crane operator, a qualified banksman, annual public liability insurance, business annual rates, training costs for staff, maintenance of pressure washer water proofs or washing off work overalls plus the power & water Plus 17.5% VAT Plus staff with over 40 yrs experience at moving & craning boats I personally think £470.83 is very cheap! But I maybe wrong...........

Thanks for the replies- guys and also the employee of Bells boat yard. In direct answer to the supporter of the £ 473 quote, this means that the lift outs at Haven marina are considerably under cutting themselves, if fact, I would say they are positively giving money away, as they can lift out and put back and pressure the boat for half that fee. Rang Greenways, and he very kindly sent me a text message via BT, that plays back as an automated voice message, informing that he is on holiday at the moment but in any event, the most they can lift is just over 7 ton. I haven't tried Brundal Bay , but I will, and thanks for that suggestion. I will post back here when I get a quote.

I would just check that the quotes are 'like for like'. You often find quotes on craning can vary, but there is normally a reason. We all generally work on a 'per foot' basis and because so many boatyard owners know each other we do check each other prices! (Mainly to make sure we are not to cheap!!) I know the Haven prices, because I was going to take on the old JPC workshop, unfortunately Haven had a strict published price list. Trade discount was only 15% from this list. Bell Boats have always been competitive so if they are a lot more, I guess they are either too busy, don't need the work, or may prefer not to have DIY'ers on the yard?? But John Bell is very good, so if any doubt just speak directly to him about it if you prefer to be lifted in Brundall. Im a strong believer that business is between two people anyway, as a slight misunderstanding or miscommunication could be damaging in the future to a business. Unless it was a formal written quote. Good luck anyway

Just for interest the Haven price looks about the same as Bells, however they both do a 'single' lift option, this is where the boat can be left in the slings for 1 hour. Basically as soon as the boat is put down and the slings removed, and crane moved etc - this is then No1 lift, its then classed as No2 lift when the crane returns. As you can see it can be misleading, so always best to check. http://www.lowestofthavenmarina.co.uk/price.asp http://www.bellboats.co.uk/cranage.html Best Regards

Quote: "(Mainly to make sure we are not to cheap!!) " That just about sums the Broads up, the same sort of cartel was in operation on the Great Ouse ring. In short, you think that £473 for a lift in and out with a pressure wash and hard standing is value for money, I don't and just because you all set an artificially high price, then you think you can justify it. Amended to add the following. Haven at £12.39 per metre = £148.96 X2 = £406 But they do have special summer rates where the lift in and out are considerably cheaper, as I said, about half the Bells quoted price.

I love it when things are mis-understood on here, but Im sure you will understand the 'joke' better when you read my post again. However, after your mention of the Norfolk Broads 'cartel' i did laugh! This is Norfolk you are talking about! But Im guess you were joking and ive misunderstood that. Personally I think all the local Norfolk Broads businesses are decent and very hard working people. Over the years many have continued to invest despite continued losses. And even though we all know each other, its very rare we actually see each other, apart from when another yard in a muddle & need assistance. Just for interest I've know Bell Boats since I started as a apprentice, and I hadn't spoken to him for almost 15 years until he phoned a while back because he needed my assistance on something. So thats not much of a cartel! I guess we at least need to meet now and again?? So I will just now enjoy the mention of the Broads 'cartel' and refrain from posting anymore on this thread. I will go to bed, as it's Sunday tomorrow and we have a boatyard to open up so we can provide diesel, pump outs & breakdown cover for our customers. Nite

Also you forgot the £4.00 per meter for pressure & the VAT. I believe you said Bell Boats included it? So the prices are about the same.....so it could be related to actual costs or it could be a cartel as you mentioned. Bell Boats may do summer offers but you need to check. Also the price at our boatyard is £290 + VAT, so we are cheapest but unfortunately we can't lift a 40ft boat. (£6.50 + VAT per ft, plus £30 + VAT pressure wash) Nite
