Hi, soon I am going for a weeks fishing on the Hickling bank at potter heigham and was just wondering what the fishing is like there at the moment(both bream and predatory)??? Last year we had a great few days there, brilliant bream fishing but the pike were a compleate dud, not even a bite, asked the guy at Lathams and he said that they had been hugely overfished so i'm just hoping that this will not be the case this time.(quick question, what size mono line should I use for this???) thank you, Ben.M :D

Hi Ben, I'm no angler, but our summer residence is on the Hickling bank. My neighbour weighed in 40lb of bream and roach in two hours on the opening day of the season. He has caught well every day since. Pike very thin on the ground. This stretch of river sees pike of a good size in Winter months. "There are old pilots. There are bold pilots............."

Wow, 40lb in 2 hours is great, its good to know that the bream fishing is going well I think i'm still going to give the perch and pike a go, i'll use a small spinning rod for the perch as I hear there are some good sized perch in there and for the pike I will probably just set up a dead bait rig and leave the bait runner/drag lever on as you never know =] Thank you for your help, if anyone else has more info it would still be appreshiated, Ben.M

During temps that we are having at present , my advice would be to let the Pike well alone , they are probably our most fragile fish in warm water temps , and die with surprising ease. I never consider Pike fishing until October at the earliest. Andy.

Ok then, I think that I will leave the pike alone and hopfully come back in winter and give it a go then and for now I will concentrate on getting the bream and roach etc. Does anyone have any tips on getting the larger bream then as I hear that there are some really nice sized bream in there and last time my dad hooked on to one which must have spun the line off of the spool for about 7secs but the hook came out :/ thank you, Ben.M

Ben , a huge thanks for your consideration , Broadland Pike stocks are at an all time low at present. So much so , that locals are having a Norfolk Piking Convention , a gathering of all things to do with Pike angling and their conservation. August 22nd from 10.00am onwards 'til 4.00pm , vast array of tackle and methods of handling , rigs , boats.......too numerous to mention everything that will be on display. All levels of experience are welcome , AND ABOVE ALL IT IS TOTALLY FREE ENTRY. Venue is Sewell Park College Norwich. You would be most welcome. Andy.
