I have recently purchased my first boat, she's currently moored on the mud at South Benfleet in Essex. She's an old wooden cabin cruiser in a very sorry state, when I aquired her I had no idea of her provenance
Expilot has posted some interesting information regarding the boats history, third post in this Thread.
This is going to be a refurbishment, NOT a full restoration. She appears to be in need of quite extensive replanking, some of the timbers & boat framing have to be repaired or replaced due to rot.
The roof areas all need to be stripped back to the wood as I suspect they will also need replanking/framing in parts at least.
Her hull appears to be solid below the waterline.
The rudder is rotted away & needs repairing/replacing.
Her engine runs like new as it was only recently installed, sadly not the original engine & she has a brand new prop.
She's also going to have a full internal refit whilst retaining some of the original features.
Maybe I'm crazy, but, I intend to carry out all of the work myself & as the boatyard are very nervous about lifting her it seems a lot of the work will have to be done on the mud. As soon as she's fit to be lifted she's coming out for the bottom to be dealt with.
This weekend I'm making a work pontoon and intend inspecting the outside of the hull, working out which planks & frames need replacing. I am also going to start stripping paint. By Monday I will have a much better idea of the magnitude of the job.
Here she is, not looking very happy at all.

I've just had a wonderful weekend staying on her, returning fried to a crisp by the Sun.
As the boatyard are refusing to lift her, because she is in such a fragile state, many of the repairs will have to be carried out on the mooring between tides.
This weekend I've identified a number of problems, I'm sure there will be many more discovered as work proceeds.
I'm afraid I don't know the names of many of the parts of a boat and will describe them as best I can. I would be grateful if anyone could help me out by telling me what they are called or direct me somewhere to learn for myself.
I knocked up a platform to work off & will make another so as I can "walk" across the mud.

There are several small leaks along the joint between the side planking and the underside.
At this stage they don't appear to be too much of a problem as she's only in water for about two hours each tide and they can wait until she's eventually lifted out.

A major leaks exist across the full width of the transom which lets in plenty of water when the tide comes in.
Bilge pump is working, although there seems to be a loose connection somewhere which I can't find as someone pulled the wires too tight when installing it. The bilge pump can't handle the water flowing into the boat from the transom.
The good news is that if she does happen to sink she can only drop about a foot onto the mud at high tide, not enough to get my feet wet inside the boat.
I believe she has also been involved in a collision which has damaged timbers and frames inside the boat.

The is also a large gouge on the outside of the hull.

The top two planks on the transom need replacing, along with some woodwork inside.

Behind the steering wheel where the side deck steps up to the front of the boat needs complete replacement along with part of the dashboard. The other side appears to be sound.
